FibreSpan has been named as the supplier to provide a communication link for the London School of Economics. The communication link will provide remote connectivity from a new student halls of residence to LSE’s IT Centre located off the Aldwych in London’s busy West End.
LSE required a high-bandwidth, high-quality, scalable network solution that had to connect to a standard Ethernet interface on LSE network equipment.
FibreSpan not only met the technical criteria of the requirement, but was able to provide dark fibre at the same price as traditional restricted services. Furthermore, the solution was priced to meet LSE’s cost model, which loads the majority of the cost into the first year, providing lower fixed annual costs for unlimited bandwidth.
Awarded the contract, FibreSpan is tasked with installing, leasing and supporting the link to Drury Lane at 1Gbps. The connection will use dark fibre and so it is easily upgradeable and able to meet the likely increase in demand for bandwidth caused by greater use of multimedia resources.
The halls of residence will be opened at the start of the 2005/06 academic year and the connection will bring immediate benefits to students – providing them with fast, safe and reliable access to LSE’s main network.
