Leeds Metropolitan University Expands

New Fibre Links into the Heart of the City

London, United Kingdom, 24 August 2005

Leeds Metropolitan University, one of the largest in the UK, selected FibreSpan to provide a high bandwidth private circuit from the main university campus to a new faculty in the city centre.

The University’s Institute of Communication Studies recently relocated its School of Film, Television and Performing Arts to the city centre landmark Electric Press building.  As the Institute is one of the largest departments of its kind in British universities, the move called for a high bandwidth, dedicated communication link between the two buildings.

Due to the nature of the requirement, the client sought an unrestricted network and dark fibre was identified as the preferred technology.  FibreSpan was selected as the most affordable and competitive solution, winning the contract against a BT LES proposition.  What’s more, the planning stages of the project uncovered the opportunity to connect a second university building in Queens Square that was en route.

Deploying this kind of network in what is the UK’s largest metropolitan centre would be extremely difficult using traditional methods, however FibreSpan implemented an efficient and non-disruptive installation between the two buildings using its patent-pending technology.  This not only enabled FibreSpan to present a competitively priced solution, but also meant that the deployment could take place within the time constraints.
